Condoms Vs. Bareback
Hey guys, just created a new poll sparked by an interesting discussion I'm having tonight with other visual novel makers.
I was planning on including condom use in any anal sex scenes in the game.
What do you think? Poll is towards the right --->!

Don't see how anybody couldn't want them used. I'm sure there's probably politer ways to phrase this, but to put it bluntly, nobody likes a buttful of spunk. :P
ReplyDeleteIt depends. If they are actually an item, then a condom might not be necessary. If it's a "hey, met you like an hour ago wanna fuck?" scenario than condom would be a must. However, it's always a good idea.
ReplyDeleteA mix of both should do. Perhaps they should use condoms for the first "scenes," then there's this turning point where they ditch using condoms, and go bareback. But I'd like more bareback scenes than condom scenes, if you ask me ;)
ReplyDeleteI agree that there should be scenes where they are used and scenes where there aren't.. For example if they have known each other for a long time, or know they are both free then condoms might not be an issue, ( they don't have to fear pregnancy) You could also make a scene where Mark and someone is drunk and forget the condom, (Que to angsty music and drama!) But yes as for the first scenes and probably most of the scenes I approve of condoms, but a few bareback scenes might be hot/interesting.

DeleteWell, to be blunt, condoms simply don't feel good. I know safe sex is a good thing but I just don't like using condoms nor do I care for it much in my porn.
ReplyDeleteOkay, as a gay male, I have to chime in here. YES CONDOMS. If you plan on showing scenes a year into a relationship, that's one thing, but my guess is we're just seeing the beginnings.
ReplyDeleteAlthough, if you chose to go bareback and the next scene is at the doctor's getting treated for the clap, that'd provide a really positive message.
HUGE YES TO CONDOMS. Safe sex really shouldn't be that big a deal. Personally, it's never made my sex worse, and if anything knowing that my partner cares about my health as well as his makes me feel valued and positively adds to the moment. Why encourage dangerous activity?
ReplyDeleteI think that if in the game you engage in unsafe sex, you should have to deal with the consequences, such as getting tested and finding out the results, good or bad. I know this is just a game, and there's supposed to be a fantasy aspect to it, but people carry their fantasies into reality. Why encourage people to do something dangerous?
Speaking on both sides, let's say in more of an ending scenario in the game, it's been a committed relationship, same partner for years, etc, then perhaps unsafe sex would be ok.

ReplyDeleteThis could be a fine line. Promoting safe sex has become a major issue in the GLB community. I remember going to a interview with Chi Chi LaRue and the use of condoms was compulsory in her videos. This was due to the recent increase of HIV as well during that time.

I think keep it simple and add the condom in. Your game looks good.
To summarize a position a few people have advocated:

The problem here is that we aren't talking about an ongoing relationship: we're talking about a victory. Presenting bareback sex as the absolute pinnacle of intimacy--as if other types of sex are less "real" or gratifying or don't count as much--is kind of problematic, at least in my view.
IMO, given the choice between having condom use decrease over the length of the game, or having condoms used spottily throughout, the latter might actually be preferable, if only because doing so would avoid sending that "bareback sex = TWUUUU WUB" message.
In all cases, though, I'd rather see condoms used universally. I also still think that the solution I advocated above (condoms by default, but individual players can switch them off--perhaps as an unlockable option) would be a compromise that should satisfy everyone.
