10K and 400+ backers! Suggest Stretch Goals!

Dear backer #400 who just pledged a hefty sum and allowed us to hit 10K...on the dot...thank you for your generosity!!!  For a second I wondered if everybody loved round numbers so much that this was gonna end the campaign right there.  XD

In other news, I thought this was way cool!  Kicktraq, a site that crunches Kickstarter project numbers, has a "hotlist" of current projects.

For a brief, perfect, beautiful second, "Coming Out On Top" was right above Mindless Self Indulgence's Kickstarter in the rankings.

If you've been following this blog for a while now, you know might now I'm quite the MSI fan.  I've always considered them the inspiration for Jed's band (now rocking three other members!)

More Stretch Goals - I Want Your Ideas

I'll be putting up the remaining stretch goals soon.  If you guys have ideas on what you'd like to see in terms of stretch goals, comment down below!  I'll see what I can do about implementing them.

About new characters: they're coming.  XD  I'm just trying to figure out how to work them into the my current time frame for the project.

  1. ORGY. NO GAY GAME WOULD BE COMPLETE WITHOUT AT LEAST AN ORGY OPTION. <3

  2. Congratulations! You've, what, doubled your initial ask? With over a month left? That's big news!

In terms of stretch goals, my suggestions:

If you raise $50,000 or more, immediately begin work on a sequel. (Assuming you have the energy and headspace to devote to such a project!)

But I'd like to suggest something weird and wonky.

For the purposes of what I'm about to say, I'm assuming it would cost about $5000 to obtain a full set of those CG and sprites which would need to be changed. It should also be noted that I have no background in art or computer programming.

Here's the big idea: if you raise $20,000, you will include an alternative player character.

This will not be a fully-developed character. (Rewriting all the dialogue in the entire game is almost certainly more trouble than it's worth.) This would really just be a different set of CG and sprites.

And for every $5000 you raise between $20,000 and $45,000, you roll an additional option into the game.

So, for example: right now you've got Whitebread Mark. Generic, middle-of-the-road white dude.

If you raise $25,000, players can choose from Whitebread Mark, Nerdy Mark or Cubbish Mark.

If you raise $40,000, players can choose from Whitebread, Nerdy, Cubbish, Girly, Surfer or Swarthy Mark.

    That sort of thing.

If you have the artists redo the CG from scratch for each one, rather than just replacing Mark, that would greatly enhance the replay value in a gotta-catch-'em-all sort of way. (Even with just 2-3 different Marks, you would need at least a dozen playthroughs to unlock every piece of art.)

And because these scenarios would be self-contained stories, you could reduce the strain on individual artists by spreading the work around. Even if the character work comes out in a substantially different style, that's not necessarily going to interfere with enjoyment--and might actually be a selling point. (Added variety, and the different scenarios would FEEL different from each other.)

Best of all, assuming this is all affordable and workable, you could throw it back to your backers in a significant way: come up with 6-7 options and, after the Kickstarter closes, hold a backer poll to determine which Marks make it into the game.

    1. This is definitely an interesting idea...thanks for laying it all out there. (So organized!)

So, help me out. I think I'd want to know your suggestions for players who'd like to play Mark as a different ethnicity? By far the biggest request I've gotten is for a Mark of color. I know I'm probably opening a whole can of worms here, but do I combine the ethnicity with the different "Mark types" into one Mark...or... ?

  3. I am so proud of you. You are an inspiration to visual novel makers. My suggestion would be to hire an animator if you can raise enough money, and have some animated cut scenes.

OR hire some voice actors! The voice acting alliance is a great resource.

  5. First off, I love this project. As a gay man who is way too into visual novels, this is right up my alley. I've already pledged, but if my finances go okay through the Christmas season, I may pledge more before this is all over.

One common trope of visual novels that I thought might make for a good stretch goal are after stories, where there's a peek into the future between the character and their chosen partner. I don't know if this is already planned for the game or not, but if not, then maybe they could be a potential stretch goal?

Anywho, thank you so much for doing this Obscura. It means a lot to me that someone is taking time to make a game aimed at a demographic that does not get as much exposure in the visual novel, or gaming in general, industry.

  6. So glad the momentum just seems to keep building! The support for the game is already so wonderful.

  7. Maybe a DLC or add-on for the game? Maybe a slight side story from a different character's point of view?

  8. I would suggest a threesome hookup from Brofinder.

Is there any option for kinkier things? Primarily toys is what I'm thinking about. By this I mean a solo Mark if he's constantly getting cockblocked or just really sexually frustrated.

  9. I like the 'after-hook-up' scenes.

Basically an epilogue or peek into the future with Mark and love interest. ^^ What would they be doing 5-10 years down the road...?
